In a time when we are not allowed to visit other houses “Mess, Clutter and Disorder” offers those visiting the museum a chance to engage with environments created amidst the global pandemic.
We are taught to desire and prioritise tidiness from a young age. Tidy home. Tidy mind. The ideology has even been profited off of in the form of self-help books and TV programmes. Tidiness is perfection. Messiness on the other hand can be interpreted as idleness.
In our exhibition, we aim to express the view that the untidy state of a home is not just a shallow representation of one's character but can symbolise deeper themes representing the state of one's mental health or the socio-economic context of the time. We encourage you to ask questions.
Why has the mess been created? What does it tell us about the person it belongs to? What does it represent in regards to contextual factors?
